According to TV9 Kannada, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has confirmed that the state has released water from the Kabini Dam into the Cauvery river. The decision follows intense public pressure and calls for protests regarding water sharing between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Shivakumar clarified that the release was a technical necessity rather than a policy shift, citing the need to maintain dam safety as the reservoir has reached its full capacity.

Speaking at a press conference at the Krishna home office following an all-party meeting, Shivakumar stated that the administration is maintaining a buffer of two to three feet for safety purposes. He emphasized that the water release began on the afternoon of August 1st specifically to manage the structural integrity of the Kabini reservoir. The Deputy Chief Minister noted that prior to this, no water had been released from the dam to Tamil Nadu.

The issue of water sharing remains a highly sensitive political topic in the region, often triggering protests and calls for statewide shutdowns. The government's decision to release water, even for safety reasons, has drawn criticism from groups demanding that the state withhold water flow to neighboring Tamil Nadu.
