According to a report from Asomiya Pratidin, a criminal case has been registered at the Bijni police station in the Chirang district of Assam against a journalist couple and three other individuals. The complaint, filed by a group of goat traders, alleges that the accused individuals intercepted vehicles transporting livestock and demanded money under the guise of journalistic investigation.

The incident reportedly occurred on Wednesday near the Dahalapara toll plaza on National Highway 27. The traders, who were transporting 445 goats from the Dhumarkur market in Bajali district to Dhubri, claim that a five-member group—identified by the report as journalists Litan Basak and Barnali Talukdar, along with Nikhil Baishya, Sanjit Chauhan, and Subrata Sarkar—demanded 45,000 rupees from them. The complainants allege that the group threatened the traders despite the availability of valid transit documentation for the livestock.

Local authorities have initiated an investigation into the allegations following the formal complaint. The case has drawn attention in the region due to the involvement of individuals identifying as members of the press, raising concerns regarding the conduct of media personnel in local business disputes. As of now, the police are reviewing the evidence provided by the traders to determine the validity of the extortion claims.
