This rapid and often unregulated vertical growth has raised significant concerns regarding structural integrity and fire safety standards in the densely populated neighborhood.

The report highlights that the proliferation of these structures is driven by a severe shortage of affordable student housing in the capital. As demand for PG (paying guest) accommodations continues to outpace supply, students are increasingly forced to reside in buildings that may not meet municipal safety codes or building bylaws. This trend has placed immense pressure on the local infrastructure, which was not originally designed to support such high-density occupancy.

Local authorities have faced ongoing challenges in curbing illegal construction in the area, particularly following reports of building collapses and fire incidents that have brought the issue of urban safety to the forefront.
