Assam: Burmese Cigarettes Worth Rs 40 Lakh Seized in Nagaon

According to Pratidin Time, Assam Police successfully intercepted a significant consignment of illicit goods in the Nagaon district on Thursday night. Authorities seized approximately 5.82 lakh Burmese cigarette sticks, with an estimated market value of Rs 40 lakh. The operation was launched following a specific tip-off regarding the smuggling of the contraband into the state.

Police officers intercepted a truck arriving from Upper Assam at the Barghat bypass near Nonoi. While the search of the vehicle resulted in the recovery of the cigarettes and the arrest of one suspected smuggler, the truck driver managed to evade capture and remains at large. Law enforcement officials are continuing their investigation into the smuggling network involved in the transport of these goods.

The seizure highlights ongoing efforts by regional authorities to curb the illegal trade of foreign-manufactured tobacco products in Northeast India. Smuggling routes through the porous borders in the region are frequently monitored by security forces, who often conduct similar operations to intercept unauthorized consignments.
