Charity cyclist, 82, dies a day after 5,200km ride across Australia

According to the Saudi Gazette, an 82-year-old charity cyclist named Bob Montgomery has passed away just one day after completing a 5,300-kilometer ride across Australia. The journey, which Montgomery dubbed 'One Last Ride,' spanned from Broome in Western Australia to Bowral, located south-west of Sydney, and was undertaken to raise funds for motor neurone disease (MND) research.

Montgomery’s family confirmed the news in a statement on social media, describing his death as both unexpected and peaceful. He was accompanied by his wife of 59 years, Jenny, at the time of his passing. The family noted that Montgomery remained dedicated to his cause until his final hours, continuing to share his message and advocate for those affected by the disease.

Alongside his 18-year-old grandson, Tom Malcolm, Montgomery successfully raised approximately A$105,000 for MND NSW. This expedition marked his sixth interstate fundraising ride, highlighting a long-standing personal commitment to the cause. The cycling community and supporters of the charity have expressed their condolences, honoring the legacy of a man who spent his final weeks dedicated to a significant philanthropic effort.
