Congo’s Ebola outbreak spreads to sixth province

According to the Saudi Gazette, the Ebola outbreak currently affecting the Democratic Republic of the Congo has officially spread to a sixth province. Jean Kaseya, the director general of the Africa CDC, confirmed on Thursday that a fatality was recorded in Bas-Uele province, marking the first time the region has been impacted during this current health crisis. The individual reportedly traveled from Isiro in Haut-Uele province to Buta, the capital of Bas-Uele, where they subsequently passed away.

Government figures released on Tuesday indicate that the outbreak has resulted in over 2,100 deaths out of more than 4,500 recorded cases. Health officials have expressed significant concern regarding the trajectory of the virus, noting that it is currently the fastest-growing outbreak on record. The World Health Organization has stated that the situation is on track to surpass the 2014-2016 west Africa outbreak, which remains the deadliest in history with over 11,000 fatalities.

International health organizations continue to monitor the situation closely as the virus moves into previously unaffected areas. The spread to a sixth province highlights the ongoing challenges in containing the transmission of the disease across the eastern regions of the country. Authorities are working to implement containment measures and track potential contacts to prevent further escalation of the crisis.
