Ghana mourns its tallest man

According to the Saudi Gazette, Sulemana Abdul Samed, widely recognized as the tallest man in Ghana, has passed away at the age of 33. Known to his community by the nickname 'Awuche,' Samed died on Monday while receiving medical treatment at a teaching hospital in Tamale. He had been admitted to the facility after developing severe infections in the sores on his legs, a complication related to his ongoing health struggles.

Samed had gained local celebrity status in northern Ghana due to his extraordinary height, which reached 7 feet 4 inches. His stature was the result of a rare hormonal disorder characterized by the overproduction of growth hormone in adults, a condition that also caused significant enlargement of his hands, feet, and facial features. Beyond his physical presence, he was remembered by relatives and neighbors in his home village of Gambaga for his generous and kind nature.

Throughout his life, Samed faced persistent mobility challenges and recurring health complications stemming from his condition. His passing has prompted an outpouring of grief across the region, with many residents visiting his family home to pay their respects. The loss highlights the significant medical and accessibility hurdles faced by individuals living with rare growth disorders in rural areas, where specialized care is often located far from home.
