Hong Kong's first leader after British handover dies

According to reports from the BBC, Tung Chee-hwa, the first Chief Executive of Hong Kong following the 1997 British handover, has passed away. Tung served as the city's leader during a transformative and often turbulent period as the territory transitioned from British colonial rule to becoming a Special Administrative Region of China.

His tenure was defined by significant political and economic challenges, including the aftermath of the 1997 Asian financial crisis and the 2003 SARS outbreak. These events, coupled with his administration's efforts to implement controversial security legislation, led to widespread public protests and eventually contributed to his resignation in 2005.

Following his departure from the top office, Tung remained a prominent figure in Hong Kong's political landscape, serving as a vice-chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. His legacy remains a subject of intense discussion regarding the 'One Country, Two Systems' framework and the integration of Hong Kong into the Chinese political system.
