Khosla-backed Mazama Energy just raised $135M to drill deeper into super-hot-rock geothermal

According to TechCrunch, geothermal startup Mazama Energy has successfully secured $135 million in a new funding round backed by Khosla Ventures. The company is focusing on advanced geothermal technology, specifically targeting the extraction of heat from super-hot rock formations located deep underground.

Mazama’s technical approach involves drilling approximately three miles into the Earth's crust to access high-temperature geothermal resources. The company claims that a single well utilizing this method is capable of generating 15 megawatts of electricity on a continuous, 24/7 basis. This technology aims to provide a reliable, carbon-free baseload power source that is not dependent on weather conditions like wind or solar energy.

The capital infusion is expected to accelerate the company's drilling operations and further develop its proprietary extraction techniques. By tapping into deeper, hotter rock layers, Mazama seeks to overcome the geographic limitations that have historically restricted traditional geothermal energy production to specific volcanic or tectonic regions.
