According to reports from Dainik Bhaskar, a police officer was killed in a militant attack in the Lal Chowk area of Anantnag, Jammu and Kashmir, on Wednesday. The victim, identified as 35-year-old Head Constable Ashiq Hussain Qureshi, was reportedly on duty providing security for Amarnath Yatra pilgrims when the incident occurred at approximately 12:30 p.m. local time.

Authorities stated that militants opened fire on the security personnel stationed in the busy market area, prompting an immediate retaliatory response from security forces. Despite being rushed to the Government Medical College (GMC) hospital following the exchange of fire, Qureshi succumbed to his injuries. The attackers managed to flee the scene immediately following the assault.

The Resistance Front (TRF), a militant organization linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba, has reportedly claimed responsibility for the attack. In the aftermath of the shooting, local police, the Indian Army, and other security agencies cordoned off the Lal Chowk area and surrounding neighborhoods. A large-scale search operation has been launched to locate the perpetrators, with additional security forces deployed to the region to maintain order and prevent further incidents.

This attack occurs amidst ongoing security concerns in the region, particularly regarding the safety of the annual Amarnath pilgrimage. Security agencies have intensified their presence across the valley, implementing strict blockades and surveillance measures to track the militants involved.
