Population Census in Ladakh, J&K, HP, Uttarakhand to begin on Sep 1: Govt

According to a report by Greater Kashmir, the Indian government has officially notified the commencement of the second phase of the national census for specific regions. The Registrar General of India and Census Commissioner, Mrityunjay Kumar Narayan, issued a gazette notification confirming that population enumeration for Ladakh, as well as designated snow-bound, non-synchronous areas within Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, is scheduled to take place from September 1 to September 30.

The notification outlines a structured timeline for the process, including a revisional round set for October 1 to October 5. To facilitate the collection of data, the government has introduced an option for self-enumeration, which will be available to residents from August 17 to August 31, immediately preceding the start of the traditional house-to-house enumeration phase.

This census operation is a significant administrative undertaking for the regions involved, particularly given the logistical challenges posed by the mountainous terrain in these states and union territories. The data collected during this period is intended to provide an updated demographic profile of these areas, which is essential for government planning, resource allocation, and the implementation of various welfare schemes. Officials have emphasized the importance of public cooperation during the self-enumeration and field survey windows to ensure the accuracy of the final population count.
