According to the Economic Times, Petronet LNG Ltd has officially named Sanjay Kumar as its next Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer. Kumar, who currently serves as the Director of Marketing at GAIL (India) Ltd, is set to assume his new role on May 13, 2027. His appointment follows the conclusion of the extended tenure of the current CEO, A K Singh.
The decision was finalized by the Petronet board during a meeting held on October 2, as confirmed by a recent regulatory filing. Kumar, 59, has been appointed for a five-year term. The transition marks a significant leadership change for India's largest liquefied natural gas importer, which plays a critical role in the country's energy infrastructure.
Petronet LNG is majority-owned by a consortium of state-run energy giants, including the Indian Oil Corporation, GAIL, ONGC, and Bharat Petroleum, each holding a 12.5% stake. Although the company is chaired by the Union Petroleum Secretary, it is registered as a private limited entity. This structure allows the firm to operate with a degree of autonomy from certain government watchdogs, such as the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG).
The story is based on a specific regulatory filing by a major Indian energy company. While it is currently single-sourced via the Economic Times, the details regarding the board meeting and the appointment of a new CEO are consistent with standard corporate governance reporting for state-owned enterprises.
