Saudi air defenses intercept Houthi drone south of Makkah

According to the Saudi Gazette, Saudi air defense forces successfully intercepted and destroyed a Houthi-launched drone south of Makkah on Tuesday evening. The Coalition to Support Legitimacy in Yemen confirmed that the drone was neutralized at 6:50 p.m. on September 15, preventing it from entering the restricted airspace surrounding the holy city.

Coalition spokesman Maj. Gen. Turki Al-Maliki stated that the incident represents a deliberate attempt to target a site of profound religious significance. Al-Maliki emphasized that the security of the Two Holy Mosques and the safety of pilgrims remain a non-negotiable priority for the coalition, noting that any further attempts to endanger civilians or religious sites will be met with necessary deterrent measures.

This incident follows a history of regional tensions, with officials citing a previous ballistic missile launch in July 2017 as part of a pattern of Houthi aggression. The coalition continues to maintain a heightened state of alert to protect Saudi territory from cross-border aerial threats. No casualties or damage were reported in connection with the latest interception.
