Saudi Center for Organ Transplantation performs first corneal retrieval

According to the Saudi Gazette, the Saudi Center for Organ Transplantation (SCOT) has successfully completed the Kingdom's first corneal retrieval from a deceased donor following cardiac death. The procedure was carried out in coordination with the organ donation unit at King Saud Medical City, marking a significant step forward in the country's transplant capabilities.

Following the retrieval, the corneas were transported to the Eye Bank at King Abdulaziz Medical City, which operates under the Ministry of National Guard. There, the tissues will undergo evaluation, processing, and preservation to ensure they meet approved medical quality standards before being utilized for transplantation. This operation represents the first tangible milestone of a pilot initiative launched on August 10, 2026, which aims to increase the availability of donor corneas and improve sight-restoration services for patients in need.

Dr. Talal Algoufi, Director General of SCOT, praised the medical teams involved for their precision and coordination. He expressed hope that this successful procedure will serve as a catalyst for a broader culture of organ donation across the Kingdom, encouraging more hospitals to participate in the national effort to bolster sustainable supplies of transplantable tissues.
