Sri Lanka deploys troops to contain growing prison unrest

According to the Saudi Gazette, the Sri Lankan government has deployed military personnel to its primary maximum-security prison in Colombo and two additional correctional facilities following a series of violent breakout attempts. Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala confirmed that the unrest resulted in three inmate deaths and left 23 others wounded, prompting an immediate security escalation across the prison system.

Minister Wijepala addressed Parliament regarding the situation, noting that disturbances have been reported at several facilities, including the Negombo, Mahara, Magazine, Kuruwita, and Pallansena prisons. Authorities are currently investigating the possibility of a coordinated conspiracy, suggesting that the timing and nature of the incidents indicate organized sabotage rather than spontaneous outbursts.
