Tinsukia Traders Receive Extortion Letters in Name of ULFA-I, Probe Launched

According to reports from Pratidin Time, business owners in the Doomdooma area of Assam’s Tinsukia district have reported receiving extortion demands issued in the name of the banned militant organization United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I). Approximately 10 traders have allegedly been targeted by these communications, which demand financial payments to the group.

The letters reportedly identify two individuals, Finance Secretary General Michael Asom and Assistant Finance Secretary Major Abhimanyu Asom, as the representatives behind the demands. Local authorities have initiated a probe into the origin of these letters to determine if they were issued by the militant outfit or if criminal elements are using the group's name to intimidate local merchants.

Extortion attempts in the Tinsukia district have historically been a concern for the local business community, often linked to the activities of insurgent groups operating in the region. Law enforcement officials are currently reviewing the letters and coordinating with the affected traders to assess the threat level and identify the perpetrators. No arrests have been reported at this stage of the investigation.
