According to Asomiya Pratidin, the Indian government has moved forward with plans to introduce polymer-based banknotes on a trial basis. The Ministry of Finance reportedly informed Parliament on Monday, July 27, 2026, that it has granted approval for the experimental circulation of 10-rupee and 20-rupee polymer notes.

This initiative follows recommendations from the Central Board of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), which has proposed the release of one billion notes—split equally between the two denominations—to test the durability and feasibility of polymer currency in the Indian market. Should these trials prove successful, the government intends to transition these denominations to polymer material on a regular basis.

The move marks a renewed effort to modernize India's currency infrastructure, a project that was first conceptualized in 2014. At that time, the government had planned to conduct field trials in cities including Kochi, Mysore, Jaipur, Shimla, and Bhubaneswar, though those initial plans did not result in a permanent shift to polymer notes.

Proponents of polymer banknotes often point to their increased longevity and enhanced security features compared to traditional cotton-based paper currency. As the government begins this pilot phase, the RBI is expected to monitor the circulation closely to determine the long-term viability of the material within the Indian economy.
