Middle East Green Initiative to showcase regional desertification efforts at UNCCD COP17

According to the Saudi Gazette, the Middle East Green Initiative (MGI) is set to participate in the 17th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP17). The event is scheduled to take place in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, from August 17 to 28, marking the initiative's first formal involvement in this specific international forum.

The MGI Secretariat-General intends to use the platform to showcase regional efforts aimed at restoring degraded land and addressing the impacts of climate change. The initiative represents a collaborative effort among 35 member countries, focusing on the implementation of practical environmental programs. A central pillar of these efforts is the ambitious target of planting approximately 50 billion trees, a project designed to facilitate the restoration of 200 million hectares of degraded land across the participating nations.

By engaging with the UNCCD, the MGI seeks to strengthen international partnerships and translate its regional environmental targets into measurable progress. The participation highlights a broader push within the region to align local sustainability projects with global environmental standards, emphasizing the importance of cross-border cooperation in tackling desertification and land degradation.
