Ministry of Heritage and Tourism commends citizen for meteorite discovery in Dhofar

According to the Times of Oman, the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism has officially commended a local citizen, Saeed bin Humaid Al-Harizi, for his proactive role in reporting a potential meteorite discovery in the Dhofar governorate. The ministry highlighted the importance of such citizen initiatives in preserving the Sultanate’s geological and natural heritage.

Al-Harizi contacted the ministry after identifying a specimen that appeared to be of extraterrestrial origin. Following his report, experts from the ministry were able to secure the object for further scientific analysis. The ministry emphasized that such discoveries are vital for academic research and the enrichment of national collections, encouraging other members of the public to report similar findings rather than attempting to handle or trade them privately.

This commendation serves as part of a broader effort by the Omani government to raise awareness regarding the legal and scientific framework surrounding geological finds. The Dhofar region is internationally recognized by geologists and researchers as a significant site for meteorite recovery, often yielding specimens that provide insights into the composition of the solar system.
