According to a report by Dainik Bhaskar, onion prices in India have experienced a significant surge between June and September, rising by approximately 82.3%. Government data indicates that the average retail price of onions climbed from 29.50 rupees per kilogram on June 1 to 53.78 rupees per kilogram by September 17. Wholesale markets have seen an even sharper trajectory, with average prices nearly doubling from 22.60 rupees per kilogram in early June to over 45 rupees by mid-September.

The primary driver behind this inflationary trend is a supply shortfall originating from key producing states, specifically Maharashtra and Karnataka. Reports suggest that the summer onion crop in Maharashtra suffered damage, leading to reduced market arrivals. Furthermore, delays in the arrival of the new Kharif crop have placed additional pressure on existing supply chains, exacerbating the scarcity in local markets.

In response to the rising costs, the government has initiated measures to stabilize prices, including the strategic release of onions from its buffer stock. By offloading these reserves into the market at subsidized rates, such as 35 rupees per kilogram, authorities aim to provide relief to consumers. Additionally, the government continues to monitor export regulations to ensure domestic availability remains sufficient to meet demand during this period of supply volatility.
