Saudi air defenses intercept Houthi ballistic missile targeting Riyadh

According to the Saudi Gazette, the Royal Saudi Air Defense Forces successfully intercepted a ballistic missile launched by Houthi forces toward Riyadh on Saturday, September 19. The Coalition to Restore Legitimacy in Yemen confirmed the interception, stating the projectile was destroyed before it could reach the capital city, which houses over 8 million residents.

Coalition spokesman Maj. Gen. Turki Al-Maliki characterized the incident as a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict. In addition to the attempt on Riyadh, the Coalition reported that Houthi forces simultaneously targeted civilian infrastructure in Baish, Taif, Farasan, and Yanbu. These secondary attempts were also thwarted by Saudi defensive systems, according to official statements.

This incident follows a period of heightened regional instability, with recent reports indicating ongoing cross-border tensions and military activity in the Arabian Peninsula. The Coalition Command has stated that it reserves the right to implement necessary measures under international humanitarian law to protect Saudi territory and deter further aggression from the Houthi militia. No casualties were reported in the capital following the interception.
