Saudi Arabia registers 9,586 new urban heritage assets, bringing total to 59,586

According to the Saudi Gazette, the Heritage Commission has officially expanded the National Register of Urban Heritage by adding 9,586 new architectural assets. This latest update brings the total number of registered heritage sites across the Kingdom to 59,586, marking a significant step in the nation's ongoing efforts to preserve and document its architectural history.

The distribution of these newly registered assets spans multiple regions, with the Asir region leading the count. Asir recorded 4,363 new registrations, bringing its regional total to 25,110. Other regions also saw notable additions, including Al-Baha with 2,547 new assets and Makkah with 1,755. Further additions were reported in Najran, Riyadh, Madinah, Hail, the Eastern Province, Qassim, Tabuk, and the Northern Borders Region.

These registrations are part of a broader initiative by the Saudi Heritage Commission to catalog and protect urban heritage sites that reflect the diverse cultural and historical identity of the country. By formalizing these assets within the national register, the commission aims to ensure their preservation for future generations and integrate them into the Kingdom's cultural tourism and development strategies. The commission continues to work with local authorities to identify and verify additional sites that meet the criteria for national heritage status.
