Assam: Three Arrested in Dhubri Cyber Extortion Racket

According to Pratidin Time, police in the Dhubri district of Assam have apprehended three individuals suspected of operating a sophisticated cyber extortion racket. The group allegedly targeted women by creating fake social media profiles to establish contact, often offering assistance with personal or financial difficulties to gain the victims' trust.

Authorities state that once the suspects had established rapport, they utilized AI-generated morphed images to intimidate the victims. By threatening to circulate these manipulated photographs, the group allegedly coerced the women into paying sums of money. The prime suspect has been identified by local police as Roni Kundu.

This incident highlights the growing concern regarding the misuse of artificial intelligence in cybercrime across India. Law enforcement officials in the region have been increasingly active in monitoring digital platforms for such extortion schemes, which leverage technology to exploit vulnerable individuals.
