According to the Times of Oman, authorities have issued a formal warning regarding a rising trend of sophisticated online travel scams targeting residents and travelers within the Sultanate. Cybercriminals are reportedly utilizing increasingly complex methods to deceive individuals, including the creation of fraudulent airline, hotel, and transport booking platforms designed to harvest personal data and financial information.

These scams often involve the use of professional-looking websites and social media advertisements that mimic legitimate travel agencies or service providers. By offering heavily discounted rates or exclusive travel packages, perpetrators entice victims into making payments for services that do not exist. Once the transaction is completed, the scammers typically cease communication, leaving the traveler without a booking and with compromised financial details.

Security experts and local officials are advising the public to exercise heightened caution when booking travel online. Recommendations include verifying the legitimacy of websites through official channels, avoiding transactions on platforms that lack secure payment gateways, and being wary of offers that appear significantly lower than standard market rates. Travelers are encouraged to use well-established, reputable travel agencies and to report any suspicious activity to the relevant cybercrime units immediately to help mitigate the impact of these ongoing digital threats.
