BSP president Mayawati opposes ‘creamy layer’ idea for SCs, STs, hits out at RSS

According to The Hindu, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) president Mayawati has formally opposed the introduction of a 'creamy layer' concept for Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) reservation benefits. The former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister criticized the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) for advocating this position, characterizing the move as a reflection of a 'casteist mindset' that seeks to undermine constitutional protections for marginalized communities.

Mayawati argued that while the proposal might be framed to serve narrow political interests, it fundamentally threatens the constitutional objectives established to ensure social justice and equality. She emphasized that the existing reservation framework is essential for the upliftment of SC and ST populations and warned that any attempt to dilute these provisions through a 'creamy layer' exclusion would be detrimental to the spirit of the Indian Constitution.
