According to Asomiya Pratidin, a theft occurred at the Mahashmashan Kali Temple in Basugaon, Chirang district. The perpetrators reportedly broke the temple locks to gain entry and proceeded to steal gold and silver ornaments belonging to the deity, as well as cash from the donation box and various brass utensils. Additionally, electronic items including a charger and battery were reported missing from the premises.

The incident was discovered by the secretary of the temple management committee during a visit to the site on the afternoon of August 9, 2026. Following the discovery, the committee alerted the local Basugaon police station. Officers have since arrived at the scene to initiate a preliminary investigation into the burglary.

Local authorities are currently examining the circumstances surrounding the breach. It has been noted that the temple has been without a resident priest for the past two months, a factor that officials are considering as they investigate how the thieves were able to target the site.
