Confined to bed for years, helpless Odisha couple seeks govt aid for food and pension in Sundargarh

According to a report by OTV, an elderly couple in the Sundargarh district of Odisha is facing severe hardship and has appealed to the government for assistance. Birendra Mahakud and his wife, Laxmi, residents of Bandhabhui village in the Bonaigarh block, are reportedly struggling to secure basic necessities, including food and pension support.

The report details a series of health and physical challenges that have left the couple unable to work. Laxmi has been bedridden for an extended period and is reportedly unable to speak clearly or move independently. Her husband, Birendra, who previously supported the family through manual labor, has suffered the loss of a leg, leaving him with a permanent disability that prevents him from continuing his former employment.

While the couple once managed to sustain themselves through domestic work, the accumulation of these health crises has rendered them dependent on external aid. The report highlights their ongoing wait for government intervention, underscoring the challenges faced by vulnerable populations in accessing social welfare schemes in rural regions. As of now, there has been no official response from local authorities regarding the specific status of their application for aid.
