According to a report by Dainik Bhaskar, a major fire broke out at a five-story building on Mirza Ghalib Street in Kolkata during the early hours of Tuesday. The blaze, which reportedly began around 1:45 AM, resulted in the deaths of nine individuals, including two women and a four-year-old child. Authorities confirmed that several victims were found in an unconscious state due to smoke inhalation, and among the deceased are both Indian and Bangladeshi nationals.

Emergency response teams, including five fire tenders, local police, and disaster management units, were deployed to the scene to conduct rescue operations. Officials stated that approximately 80 people were successfully evacuated from the building, which housed several hotels. Six individuals sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical attention. The dense smoke trapped many guests who were asleep at the time, significantly complicating efforts for firefighters to reach the upper floors.

West Bengal Fire Minister Sujit Bose (referred to as Kaushik Chowdhury in the initial report) visited the site to oversee the situation. While the fire has been brought under control, cooling operations remain underway to ensure the structure is safe. Preliminary investigations suggest a short circuit may have been the cause of the incident, though officials are continuing their assessment of the building's safety compliance. Police have indicated that the death toll could rise as identification and search efforts continue.
