According to Vijayavani, local officials in the Billur Gram Panchayat have launched a new initiative aimed at the protection and sustainable management of local water resources. During an inspection of desilting operations at the Govindaraja Kunte pond near Vangarlapalli village, Panchayat Development Officer (PDO) Narayanaswamy emphasized that the preservation of water bodies is a civic duty for all residents.

Officials highlighted that the contamination of water sources is being driven by factors such as deforestation, the discharge of untreated sewage from residential areas into ponds and canals, and the improper disposal of waste. Narayanaswamy urged citizens to remain vigilant and take proactive steps to protect the water bodies within their respective jurisdictions to ensure long-term environmental health.

L. Nagaraj, a tax collector involved in the project, noted that the initiative is being implemented under the VBJ Ramji scheme. He reflected on the traditional practices of ancestors, who maintained ponds and canals to ensure groundwater recharge and mitigate water scarcity. The current project aims to restore these traditional water management systems, and officials are calling on the community to utilize the scheme effectively to secure their local water supply.
