Strict action taken against agency for failure of Tensile roofing at Rourkela Station

According to OTV, the Chakradharpur Division of South Eastern Railway has initiated formal contractual action against the agency responsible for the tensile roofing installation at Rourkela Railway Station. The canopy, which features an RCC foundation and a structural steel framework, had been completed in October 2025 and was under a seven-year guarantee period at the time of the incident.

On May 27, 2026, severe weather conditions involving high-velocity winds resulted in significant damage to the tensile fabric, with nearly half of the material being torn away. While the underlying structural steel framework remained intact, railway authorities have cited the failure as a clear deficiency in material quality, workmanship, and project execution.

This incident has prompted an internal review of the construction standards applied to the station's recent upgrades. The railway division is currently pursuing accountability from the executing firm to ensure that repairs are conducted in accordance with the original contract terms. No injuries were reported in connection with the roof damage, though the event has highlighted concerns regarding the durability of modern station infrastructure in the region.
