According to a report by Sambad, consumers in India are facing increased financial pressure due to a sharp rise in sugar prices ahead of the upcoming festive season. The report indicates that sugar prices have surged by approximately 500 to 700 rupees per quintal over the past month.

Market data cited in the report highlights significant price variations across major Indian cities. As of the latest assessment, the retail price of sugar has reached 49 rupees per kilogram in Delhi, 52 rupees in Mumbai, 55 rupees in West Bengal, 51 rupees in Ranchi, and 53 rupees in Chennai. In the wholesale market of Bhubaneswar, prices have climbed to 5,150 rupees per quintal, marking a roughly 17 percent increase from the 4,400 rupees recorded just one month ago.

This upward trend in commodity pricing comes as households prepare for seasonal festivities, which typically see an increase in demand for sugar-based products. While the report focuses on the immediate impact on retail and wholesale costs, it reflects broader concerns regarding inflationary pressures on essential food items in the Indian market. Authorities have not yet issued a formal statement regarding potential interventions to stabilize these prices.
