According to Polimer News, the Madras High Court has issued a directive to the Tamil Nadu police, stating that authorities should not deny permission for rallies involving the display of the national flag based on arbitrary or inappropriate reasons. The court's intervention followed a petition filed by Ramesh Kumar, the Coimbatore district president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), who challenged the denial of permission for a flag-bearing procession in Coimbatore ahead of Independence Day.

During the proceedings, the presiding judge emphasized the historical significance of the national flag, referencing the legacy of freedom fighter Tirupur Kumaran. The court asserted that every citizen possesses the fundamental right to carry the national flag in any part of the country and expressed dissatisfaction with the state's handling of the request. The judge remarked that the government's actions in this instance were not in line with constitutional principles regarding public assembly and national symbols.

Following the hearing, the court ordered the police to grant permission for the BJP-led procession, subject to standard regulatory conditions. This ruling reinforces judicial precedents in India concerning the right to peaceful assembly and the symbolic importance of national identity in public demonstrations. The police are expected to comply with the court's instructions to ensure the event proceeds under the specified guidelines.
